Why hotlinking and bandwidth stealing is a bad idea

So, I was reviewing access logs for a server I maintain, and I noticed some incoming links to some of my images from a site I wasn’t familiar with. I did a little investigating and it turned out someone was hotlinking to some of my images.

The image is a simple VMware diagram that is available on the VMware website, but they felt the need to not only rip it from my site, but to link directly to it on my site, costing me additional bandwidth and server load.

So this is what happens when you hotlink to images on a site you don’t own:

(Oddly enough, the image i chose was also being hotlinked from a forum, but I am hosting it now)

If you want to see the poor sap’s page, you can check it out but ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK HOWEVER, it doesn’t look like a very legit site:
