Politics, Porker of the Month »

[25 Aug 2006 | Comments Off | 59 views]

CAGW has given this month’s honor to Represenative Charles Taylor, Republican from North Carolina.
Washington, D.C. – Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today named Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.) Porker of the Month for burnishing his credentials as an unabashed champion of pork-barrel spending.
As House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman, Rep. Taylor shows no shame when it comes to flaunting pork. He was even invited to attend an exclusive reception in Asheville, N.C., for the infamous Sparta Teapot Museum. CAGW gave the museum the “Tempest in a Teapot” Oinker Award …

Oh this is classic, reminds me of Khrushchev banging his shoe at the UN.
China’s Ambassador to the UN Sha Zukang admonished Washington yesterday of interfering in Beijing’s domestic affairs, particularly in its military program. Asked by a BBC reporter about China’s growing military budget, Sha Zukang did not contain himself and shouted out: “The population of China is six times as much as that of the United States. So, it’s time for Americans to shut up and keep quiet. They will be better off like this.”
Uhhhh, yeah… And the world …

(via: digg) EFF has a post on the Convention on Cybercrime treaty that is up for vote in the Senate in the next two days. This treaty basically states that the US has to not only enforce it’s own poorly written “cybercrime” laws, but those of other countries. For instance, China regulary censors their citizens from writing anything derogatory or negative about China or anything relating to it. Most of those people have established blogs and use message boards outside of the country (usually the US) to be able to …

New book I just saw on Glenn Reynolds’ site sounds like it would be a good time… 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America : (and Al Franken Is #37) by Bernard Goldberg.
Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at “ordinary” Americans) … the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they’re smart just because they’re famous) … the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat) …

Reuters is reports that Iran vows to pursue nuke plans.
Iran claims to be pursuing uranium enrichment solely for peaceful purposes; however Russia has agreed to supply Iran with enriched uranium fuel, thereby eliminating the need for any domestic enrichment programs. I think it’s quite clear that Iran’s plans are for making weapons and not for peaceful use.

You have to love Chrenkoff commenting on a recent post from Axis of Logic:
But the idiocy doesn’t stop there – it culminates with this pearl from Whitney:

“We have to recognize that the disparate elements of Iraqi resistance, belittled in the media as the ‘insurgency’, are the legitimate expression of Iraqi self-determination.”
Yep, a few thousand murderous thugs with AK-47s are a more legitimate expression of self-determination that the eight million who voted in the democratic election. Silly, George W.; instead of stealing the Florida vote in 2000, he should have simply …

Great piece over at The Indepundit about a run in he had with Pablo Paredes at San Diego’s Annual Earth Fair.
For those of you who don’t know, in December, 2004 Pablo Paredes refused to deploy to the Arabian Gulf with his ship the USS Bonhomme Richard.
“You’re a selfish bastard, Pablo.” … “And your day of reckoning is coming.”
Good stuff…

The Washington Post is reporting an Anti-Nuke, Anti-War Rally at UN.
It’s amazing how ignorant these people are, my favorite is:
“Shut down everything _ testing, nuclear weapons, the war,” said Vickie Downie, of Teseque, N.M., who came with a group calling for the closing of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki were designed.
Very specific so I can only infer as to what Vickie is getting at; I’ll address what I think is her primary concern, Nuclear Weapons Testing, specifically the United States programs.
There …

DanTheManDoyle.com has a good take on the whole filibuster thing.
I especially love the quote from Teddy during the Clinton years:
“Senators Who Feel Strongly About The Issue Of Fairness Should Vote For Cloture, Even If They Intend To Vote Against The Nomination Itself. It Is Wrong To Filibuster This Nomination, And The Senators Who Believe In Fairness Will Not Let A Minority Of The Senate Deny [The Nominee] His Vote By The Entire Senate. (Sen. Ted Kennedy, Congressional Record, 6/21/95, p. S8806)”
Wow, well put Teddy and that’s not at all hypocritical…

The Register is reporting that a tax being proposed by the Stichting Thuiskopie foundation is set to become law in the Netherlands. The tax is based on the amount of storage on the device, at a rate of €3.28 ($4.3) per gigabyte. This would add an additional €180 ($235) to the price of a 60GB ipod.
Am I the only one who thinks this is insane? It’s time for these record companies to get with the program and stop charging ridiculous prices for their product instead of sponsoring bogus levies and …
