A little flooding this afternoon from Tropical Storm Barry. This was just before high tide, which is coming up in a few moments.

TS Barry Guy in Cuffs
In other news, we found this guy in cuffs in front of our neighbors house… Whatever that is about…

TS Barry Guy in Cuffs with Officer
Supposedly he had sped through once and was told to slow down and failed to do so. On his second trip back, he did it again so they chased him down in their off road vehicle…
ts_barry_flood_police_dump_.jpg
You know it’s sad when you get stopped by a dump truck. He allegedly threw something out of his window just before the stop, which prompted a search in which I’m told the officers found something he shouldn’t have… Other than that, an uneventful day…

China Text-Messages Millions on Typhoon /illc0mm/2006/07/27/china-text-messages-millions-on-typhoon/ /illc0mm/2006/07/27/china-text-messages-millions-on-typhoon/#comments Thu, 27 Jul 2006 23:45:45 +0000 illc0mm /illc0mm/2006/07/27/china-text-messages-millions-on-typhoon/ Now this is pretty slick (via newsvine):

Chinese residents salvage their what is left of their belongings after a flash flood when Kaemi weakened into a tropical depression and made landfall in the village of Shangyou in southern China's Jiangxi province, Wednesday July 26, 2006. (AP Photo/EyePress) With Typhoon Kaemi roaring toward China’s crowded southeast, Dr. Yang was sealing his apartment windows against the pounding rain when his cell phone buzzed to life.

“Typhoon forecast to make land this evening,” said the message sent to millions of mobile phones in the coastal city of Jinjiang and surrounding Fujian province. “Please attend to preparations.”

Once the domain of gossipy teenagers, text messages have become a key tool for Chinese authorities during this year’s unusually powerful typhoon season.

Nearly one-third of China’s 1.3 billion people has a cell phone, creating a rival to television and radio as a way to reach the public.

I have to say, that’s a smart idea. While some complained of poor execution, the principal is sound. Hopefully we’ll see something like this in the states.

According to US Senator Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.), the incompetence of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (D), and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco (D) rests solely on the Bush administrations hatred toward mass transit.

Yeah, that makes sense…

It was the Bush administration’s fault that hundreds of city school buses weren’t dispatched to evacuate the hurricane-battered residents of New Orleans two weeks ago before floods swamped the city, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu said Sunday.

Asked on “Fox News Sunday” why New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin failed to follow the city’s evacuation plan and press the buses into service, Landrieu blamed Bush administration cuts in mass transit funding.

Story Continues Below

“Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out of the city in front of a hurricane,” she said. “And it’s because this administration and administrations before them do not understand the difficulties that mayors . . . face.”

Oh, so it’s Bush’s fault that the bus drivers don’t show up for work?

Landrieu then added: “In other words, this administration did not believe in mass transit. They won’t even get people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out.”

Saying she was unwilling to criticize Louisiana officials, the Louisiana Democrat insisted that Mayor Nagin’s evacuation efforts had been a smashing success.

“Because the mayor evacuated the city, we had the best evacuation . . . of any evacuation I’ve seen. I’m 50 years old; I’ve never seen one any better,” Landrieu told FNS.

That prompted FNS host Chris Wallace to remind: “But there were a hundred thousand people left in the city.”

Landrieu once again blamed the White House, saying:

“They did [have] a hundred thousand people left in the city because this federal government won’t support cities to evacuate people, whether it’s from earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. And that’s the truth.”

Since when do we evacuate people from earthquakes and tornadoes? How the hell do you even do that?

The simple fact is, New Orleans is a party town. The city and it’s workers are notorious for their lax work ethic and horrible leadership and it’s finally bitten them in the butt.

Dennis Damage /illc0mm/2005/07/10/dennis-damage/ /illc0mm/2005/07/10/dennis-damage/#comments Mon, 11 Jul 2005 02:04:14 +0000 illc0mm /illc0mm/?p=44 I lied… Went out to survey downtown Saint Petersburg and found some heavy damage at the Vinoy Club. I’m told that a Hatteras sunk as a result of injuries sustained when major parts of their floating dock broke free. The boat is currently being hauled out for repairs, might try to get pictures of it tomorrow.

The pictures were taken at 8:30PM or there abouts.

Goodbye Dennis, stupid jerk… /illc0mm/2005/07/10/goodbye-dennis-stupid-jerk/ /illc0mm/2005/07/10/goodbye-dennis-stupid-jerk/#comments Sun, 10 Jul 2005 20:36:46 +0000 illc0mm /illc0mm/?p=42 Well, probably my final Dennis entry. It’s high tide and the water has almost completely receded. A final picture to compare to, I expect the streets to be dry by around 6:30PM even though the next low tide isn’t until 12:13AM (read midnight) tomorrow morning.

I’m wondering what kind of effect Dennis might have on all fish kills from the red tide we’ve been having lately and on the red tide itself. Hopefully he’ll pull all of the nastiness out of the bay.

Water begone!
And stay out!!! High tide and the water is still draining…

Flood Part 2: Electric Boogaloo /illc0mm/2005/07/10/flood-part-2-electric-boogaloo/ /illc0mm/2005/07/10/flood-part-2-electric-boogaloo/#comments Sun, 10 Jul 2005 17:15:37 +0000 illc0mm /illc0mm/?p=41 So, it’s 1:12PM about 3 1/2 hours before high tide and the flood waters have started to recede. Looks like no water in the house this time. We’ll see what the 4:35 high tide has in store for us.

Bring it on Dennis! /illc0mm/2005/07/10/bring-it-on-dennis/ /illc0mm/2005/07/10/bring-it-on-dennis/#comments Sun, 10 Jul 2005 16:29:29 +0000 illc0mm /illc0mm/?p=40 So Dennis has passed us by, but not after splashing us with a really large puddle… What a jerk…

In any case, let the Shore Acres Flood begin! At about 6:00AM the wife noticed we were getting water in the streets, high tide was at 6:36AM, so that should be good news… However, it’s 12:28PM right now and even though low tide was at 10:21AM the water continues to rise.

This is caused, most likely, by the winds from Dennis pushing water into the bay and subsequently up the storm drains into the streets. My back yard is bone dry (thanks to my wonderful geo-engineering, or just because there is no direct access to the streets back there…

Expecting some fun at 4:35PM with another high tide. Maybe Dennis will start to pull some of the water back by that time, but probably not.

Here are some pictures, enjoy my pain!
